Day 12: Odds and Ends

I had no formal plans for the day. It’s the day I built in to do stuff, and do stuff I did! I had another awesome night of sleep — except for when I had to text the front desk around 12:45 AM because someone in the next room was slamming doors repeatedly.
Anyhoo… I got up and got dressed and headed next door to the 9/11 Museum and Memorial. As I left, an usher asked me how I felt about the exhibit. I told her I was emotionally overwhelmed, but in a good way. That’s definitely the best way to describe this museum.
Throughout the exhibit there were personal items from people who died and survived the attack on the World Trade Center. These were interesting, as were the photographs of the building and people, but the written narrative of the day is what attracted me most.
The part with Ray Pfeiffer and John Feal’s fight to get 9/11 health coverage was so small, it doesn’t surprise me they have to fight so hard to get funding. Walking through the museum, I got a glimpse of an idea of how much work the front line workers did that day and how much they sacrificed. The fact that we’re not readily offering help to these men and women is absolutely criminal. The work Jon Stewart is doing with this group is saint-like. I can’t even begin to fully express the disappointment I feel. </soapbox>
After the museum and memorial, I headed back to my room to have leftovers for lunch and to take a quick (much needed) nap. I got myself sorted and headed back out again. This time, the destination was the Museum of Sex. (Two vereeery different ends of the spectrum today…)
The exhibits were interesting. There was a special exhibit about a woman who helped get the whole self-exploration and oral sex movement going. Then there was Funland. This part would have definitely been better if I had a date, but it was still interesting. And don’t get me started on the gift shop…
Dinner this evening was from a place called Hare Sushi. I had some delicious zucchini tempura and chicken udon... and some plum wine, of course!
So now I’m back at the hotel. It’s been a long, but fun, day. Tomorrow I’m getting up early to head to the Statue of Liberty, not sure what’s in the middle, and then heading to see Wicked tomorrow night. So excited!!
